Course Details

This course is suitable for newly qualified teachers, students working towards QTS, colleagues who require more CPD in PE and other adults supporting PE in schools.

Course Outcomes

  • Better understanding of National Curriculum requirements and how PE and School Sport can directly influence whole school standards as judged by Ofsted.
  • How the PE and Sport Strategy for Young People '5 hour offer' has an impact on the whole school Well Being agenda, as part of Every Child Matters.
  • Improve confidence and competence in leading learning in a range of practical activities which can be curriculum or out of school hours learning focussed.

Provisional Schedule (subject to change)

  • 9.15am – Arrive at school / welcome and refreshments
  • 9.30–10am – PESSYP, the 5 hour offer and the National Curriculum – Why do we have to teach PE?
  • 10–10.30am – Structuring your lessons – How should I do it? ( learning outcomes, the use of the warm up and cool down, use of plenaries, whole part whole vs part whole etc)
  • 10.30–11.30am
  • 1) Physical Literacy – What is it? Why is it so important? ( A,B,C,s / Multi Skills / FUNS resource / YST Multi skill cards)
  • 2) Lesson demonstrating development of physical literacy.
  • 11.30–11.45 –Refreshments
  • 11.45–12.45
  • 1)Using PE to support your classroom teaching ( utilising the personal learning and thinking skills / difference b/w using PE and sport in the classroom ie Howzat and educating by doing in PE lessons / linking the PE lesson to the rest of the curriculum )
  • 2) Lesson demonstrating how PE can educate the whole pupil.
  • 12.45–1.30pm – Lunch
  • 1.30–2.45pm – Micro teaching – your turn now!
  • 1) Planning a lesson – NQTs in groups of 4/5 Given a theme to base a 15 minute lesson on / no warm up and cool down / supported by tutor mentor
  • 2) Groups take it in turns to teach a 15 minute lesson / nominate one volunteer from planning group to lead y4 class
  • 2.45–3.15pm – Discussion regarding the lessons / what aspects of the PE and whole school NC were addressed? All Tutors
  • 3.15–3.30pm – Plenary re whole day / course evaluations / proposal to buddy up AS, EW and AB with NQTS – potential to offer ongoing support
